In the earliest stage of leukemia, the bone marrow begins producing abnormal white blood cells, but their numbers are still relatively low. These immature cells do not function properly, yet they may not cause noticeable symptoms right away. At this point, healthy blood cell production is only minimally affected, and the immune system still functions close to normal.
